Why do I need to Test & Tag?

Occupational Health & Safety Legislation imposes a duty of care to provide a safe workplace.  Failure to ensure the safety of electrical equipment may result in the death or injury of yourself, your employees or others.

 

To meet your duty of care, you are required to reduce the risk of electrical shock as far as practicable.  One method of achieving this is to ensure your tools, leads and appliances are tested for electrical fault on a regular basis.  Every workplace should be safe for everyone working in it.  Not only is human life at risk from electrical leakage but property and assets are at risk from electrical fires that could be prevented.

 

What needs to be tested?

Anything that plugs into a power point should be regularly inspected.  These include, but is not limited to:

 

  • Computers & Office Equipment

  • Power Tools & Battery Charges

  • Extension cords and power boards

  • Kitchen appliances

 

Service includes:-

  • A visual check of all appliances & electrical leads to identify any problems or defects.

  • Electrical test performed with a portable tester on all items.

  • Tagging of all appliances & leads with next due dates.

  • If possible, leads or equipment repaired by a licensed electrician.

  • A computer generated test result on all items tested.

  • Follow up reminder (via - email, text or phone call)

 

All retesting is completed is accordance with the retest time frames recommended in AS/NZS 3760:2010

 

For the most common environments, it is recommended the following frequencies:

  • 3 months - Construction, Tradie Tools

  • 6 months - Factories, Warehouses, Showrooms and Mobile Businesses

  • 12 months - Office environments where the equipment/supply cord is prone to flexing or open to abuse

  • 5 yearly - Computers & where the equipment/supply cord is not prone to flexing or open to abuse
